42nd Street follows the Cobb County School District Calendar and inclement weather decisions.
Your child may bring a snack and water in a closed container (single use water bottle with cap or spill-proof reusable bottle). There will be snack time allocated for students who bring a snack. There are designated areas where food is allowed. No food is allowed inside the studios.
42nd Street maintains a closed-class policy as this best supports the students’ development of self-expression, creativity, self-confidence and independence. There is a small lobby area at the Georgia Ballet but the building is not equipped to accommodate all of our parents and siblings at once. We request that you drop your children off for classes.
Please communicate all alternative arrangements for transportation (going home with a friend, different adult/parent picking up) in writing via email/text or on our sign-in sheet when you drop your child off. If you experience an emergency on a class day, please text our emergency number at 470-485-4117.
It truly takes a village to produce a show of this size, so we ask that each family commit to volunteer jobs as they are able throughout the year. SignUpGenius will be used to communicate volunteer needs.
We do not require families to sell tickets in order to participate in the program. We do hope you will spread the word and encourage members of your community to attend!
Tech week is the week leading up to the performances. There will be a parent meeting in January with much more detail about tech week, but this is a basic overview. We will rehearse Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of that week from 10 am - 4 pm at The Art Place and perform our show there on Friday and Saturday. This means you must plan to miss any weekly classes/activities you normally have on those days. Please do not schedule any doctor, dentist, or other appointments on these days. We will start promptly and release promptly, but the cast will need every moment of these rehearsals to get used to the theater and the addition of lights, set, costumes, and other factors.
Families will be expected to provide their own jazz or character shoes and stage makeup for performances. We will do our best to provide the majority of costume pieces, but you may be asked to find clothing or items from home to use in the production, which will be returned to you at the end of the show. It is up to you whether to purchase new or use items you already have. Costume requirements will be distributed in January to allow families time to plan for the purchase/acquisition of these items.
It is understood that students will have some conflicts with rehearsal days. Please list all conflicts on your audition form at the beginning of the year. Conflicts with performances and tech week, however, cannot be accommodated. Upon reviewing the schedule, if you have conflicts with any of the performances or tech week rehearsals, please reconsider your participation in the program for this year.
For the audition you will prepare 2 short song excerpts: one chosen by the director which all students will prepare, and one of your choice. Next, you will need to prepare a monologue of 60 seconds or less. This can be from a favorite book or movie, or even a poem. There are websites which have free monologues available for auditioning, but we recommend choosing something of higher quality than these. Finally, a dance audition will take place during class time. You will learn a 16-count dance combination as a group.
